Don’t miss out on an excellent opportunity to meet others in the community and get back into shape all at the same time! Berea College and the Bluegrass Area Agency on Aging and Independent Living will host the First Annual Bluegrass Regional Boomer and Senior Games on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 from 8:00 A.M. till 5:00 P.M.

Berea College’s Seabury Athletic Center will be the location for most of the competitions to be held for all persons who are fifty years old and over.  Did you know studies show that, in the long term, it hurts people’s health far more by not exercising than by exercising? “As a rule, as we age, people should stay as physically active as possible. Most people know that exercise is good for them. Somehow, though, aging adults have been left out of the picture -- until recently. (WebMd Newsletter, 2008)

Dr. Martha Beagle, Professor of Physical Education, Health and Athletics, said that she sees these games as an amazing opportunity for their Athletic Department, the students, and the entire Bluegrass community.  She added “This is a wonderful professional experience for me as well.”  Athletic events will include: badminton, basketball, cycling, golf, racquetball, softball, swimming, track & field, volleyball, and tennis.

The fee for competing is $10.00, payable during registration at 8:00 A.M. at the Seabury Center.  The fee includes a games T-shirt along with lunch. As part of the Bluegrass Regional Boomer and Senior Games, all athletes, spectators and any other interested persons are asked to enter their best art and/or crafts in the “Art at the Games” exhibit.  First, second and third place “best of show” will be selected by a panel of independent judges and awarded medals in each medium of art work.

The Berea Country Club will be the venue for all men and women’s golf competitions beginning with a shotgun start for 18 holes of golf.  Competitors are encouraged to bring their own carts since a limited number are available at the club.  Green’s Fees, payable at the Berea course, will be $16.50 in addition to the $10.00 registration fee at Seabury Registration.  Awards will be presented after each sporting event is completed by all competitors entered.  Mark the date of Sept. 6, 2008 on your calendar and come enjoy the First Annual Bluegrass Regional Boomer and Senior Games in Berea, KY.
