Nuestro futuro esta en nuestras manos - our future is
in our hands.
Mujeres Unidas (United Women) is composed of women from Central America
whose goal is to learn skills that can help them become economically
independent. Many of these women were underemployed and eager to improve
their skills and job prospects. Women receive training in sewing skills,
crochet, and jewelry. The program also focuses on housing assistance and
self-development. Mujeres Unidas is needed because there aren’t other places
in the area where the members of this group can receive training because of
the language barrier, not meeting the criteria for enrollment and schedule
conflicts. Participants also take English classes.
"This group is gives every member a sense of belonging and accomplishment
that will enrich our new home [the United States]," said Sandra Powell. "We
came together because we want to work in unity toward a future without
oppression and with opportunities to become self-sufficient." Mujeres Unidas
provides the only place where members of this self-help group can receive
training in their native language and at a time that does not interfere with
their daytime work schedules.
