Foothills’ Family Services Programs work to prevent the abuse and neglect of children or to prevent a recurrence of abuse or neglect. Therapists provide families with intensive and non-intensive services.
Foothills’ highly trained therapists work with families who are referred to us by the Department of Community Based Services. The therapy used by staff is behaviorally-oriented and focuses on goal attainment, positive reinforcement and active listening techniques. Services offered include referrals, child and family counseling and parenting classes. In addition, families will be provided with the assistance necessary to prevent removal of children from the home and address the children’s physical, mental, emotional and educational needs. Our primary goal is to promote safe, healthy and stable family home environments. Foothills’ Intense Family Preservation and Family Reunification services are provided in Anderson, Clark, Bourbon, Boyle, Bullitt, Estill, Fayette, Franklin, Garrard, Harrison, Henry, Jessamine, Lincoln, Madison, Mercer, Nicholas, Oldham, Powell, Scott, Shelby, Spencer, Trimble and Woodford Counties. Family Preservation services are intensive in-home services offered to families who are in imminent danger of having a child come into the custody of the department and removed from their home unless the family can make the changes necessary to provide adequate care and safety. These services assist the family in identifying and understanding the problems within the family that place a child at risk of out-of-home placement and assist them in finding ways to change how the family unit functions. The worker gives his or her home phone number to the family and is on call 24 hours a day. The worker begins with the problems the family identifies, rather than patronizing the family and dismissing their concerns. Staff are trained in several different approaches to helping families, so they don’t become hostile to those families if their first attempts to help don’t work. The worker spends her or his time in the family’s home, so they can see the family in action — and so the family doesn’t have the added burden of going to the worker’s office. Family Reunification provides comprehensive home-based intervention to families with children who have been placed in out-of-home care. The purpose of the program is to reunite these children with their families and provide the necessary services that will support families in preventing re-placement of their children in care and in maintaining long-term stability. Services offered include: Ø Family assessment based on the family’s current resources and strengths Ø Family therapy, based on the family’s goal for reunification Ø Case management, aimed at coordination of service providers and the elimination of the need for a social services caseworker Ø 24-hour crisis services, to provide support whenever it might be needed
